Shoebox Bedrooms - Your Artwork Seen By The World

On Saturday 14th August 2010, 11-4pm at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery, Leeds, I ran an adult workshop which invited participants to create a room in a shoebox. After a brief background into my practice, my group set to work on their personal creations. I even received a completed shoebox from someone who couldn't participate in the workshop but had made one earlier, which was wonderful! It was an incredibly enjoyable afternoon and hopefully the first of many artist workshops that I will be running in the future.

The photographs of the completed rooms are now in the hands of Dr GR Barker-Read, Head of Academic Quality and Standards at The University of Leeds, who will be recreating each room in Second Life for an online exhibition that the whole whole can visit. A huge thank you to Layla at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery for inviting me to host the event!

I have been kindly invited by Layla at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Galley in Leeds to run my own workshop in the summer, which has recently been featured in The Leeds Guide! My workshop concept was inspired by the Shoebox Art exhibition held at The Haunch of Venison in London a few months ago, which included work by artists such as Damien Hirst, Mark Wallinger and Tracy Emin.

On Saturday 14th August 2010, 11-4pm at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery, I am inviting participants to create a room in a shoebox. On completion, each room will be photographed and recreated in a virtual exhibition online in Second Life, where the
whole world can visit, and enter into your creations.

The room could be anything you like - a replica of your childhood bedroom, a room from a dream, one from a mysterious photograph,
or something completely surreal.

The Watched Cannot See the Watcher

I am totally in love with these drawings by Liverpool based artist James Quin. 'The Watched Cannot see the Watcher' is a preliminary drawing for a series of 300 drawings on found book backs entitled 'Repetition'. Each drawing is made from memory based on the previous drawing, the process repeated 300 times over a nine month period. The process seeks through the act of repetition to uncover 'the multiple readings' of the image and to make visible the subjectivity of memory and the marking of time. The variations/flaws of the image, act as tiny glitches in the attempt to remember.

One looks at the subject, studies it intently for a few moments, remembers a particular set of relationships for a split second, and transfers that memory of seeing, remembering, forgetting. Repeat. I have shamefully neglected my blog for a little while now. This has been due to being swamped with funding applications for my Masters at Central Saint Martins, planning a big workshop that i'm giving in the summer at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery and various freelance photography bits (I have been really busy, promise!) Frequent posts to follow soon, but in the mean time take a look at this...

Here is a curtain/stained glass window made out of Kodachrome slides by Yarnzombie. The slides date from the 50s and early 60s and are connected together using aluminum chainmail rings. I think it is very beautiful indeed.

Traveling Moleskines

I was invited to take part in the Travelling Moleskine® project launched by Culture Vulture and The Big Draw. A number of these iconic sketch books were unleashed into the world to return to Culture Vulture by the end of September 2009. The project culminated in a fabulous arty party and exhibition in October to help raise funds for the Campaign for Drawing. Here's my contribution, 10 points to the first person who can guess who it is...

Thompson Christmas Card

In December, Thompson Brand Partners thought they'd put a bit of a spin on the usual client Christmas Card and decided to make a film instead. 9 monitors were stacked in the recognisable shape of a Christmas tree and in turn monitor would in come on to reveal festive flickering images. Here are a few stills from the evening, including a photograph of the clock to prove just how long we were at work, setting up, filming and dismantling . That's dedication! Many thanks to Lumen for loaning us such shiny equipment.

XXX:Get Off at Edge Hill

Last week I took a trip over to Edge Hill station in Liverpool for the grand opening of my latest group exhibition, XXX: Get Off at Edge Hill. The show launched Metal's renovation of Edge Hill station as exhibition spaces and offices.

The exhibition was curated by Metal's Artists in residence Al and Al, and features work by Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Hannah Wilkes, myself and many others.

The exhibition is open until the 5th December, and is most definitely worth visiting. Check out the Metal website for more details. (www.metalculture.com)

Village Green

Here is a sneak peek of Village Green, the one day arts festival in Chalkwell Park, Southend on Sea hosted by Metal in September.

I was invited to present my interactive installation Family Portraits, offering visitors to have a professional family portrait taken. However, instead of being pictured with their actual family the subjects were complete strangers asked to participate at random.

The day went unbelievably well! It was relentlessly busy, leaving me with 3 half hour breaks in 9 hours (though I managed to sneak off to see Phil Jupitas.) So many people wanted to be part of their very own UnFamily and walked away with a shared experience to keep with them always. The hundreds of images are currently in post production...UnFamilys coming soon.

Leeds College of Music Prospectus

Save the date - XXX Get Off At Edge Hill

Thursday 22nd October, 6.30pm- 9pm

Metal will be launching the newly renovated Edge Hill Station, a creative space for art, events and conversation in Liverpool. There will be an opportunity to see inside the historic grade II listed buildings at Edge Hill, the oldest passenger station in the world. This is the site where George Stephenson’s Rocket set off with the Prime Minister on board, the day the Liverpool to Manchester Railway opened for business. The transformed Engine Room, Boiler House and Accumulator Tower will be open all evening for guests to visit.

Taking as their starting point the well known scouse phrase ‘Get off at Edge Hill’ Metal’s artists in residence AL and AL have curated a site specific group exhibition that explores sexual and industrial metaphors in painting, sculpture and film This exhibition will run until 5th December.

Saturday 26th September, Chalkwell Park, Southend on Sea, Essex, 11am - 10pm

Metal are hosting a one day arts festival in Chalkwell Park, Southend on Sea as part of the launch of their newly renovated low carbon, artist's residency space that sits in the centre of the park.

I will be presenting my interactive installation Family Portraits, offering visitors to have a professional family portrait taken. However, instead of being pictured with their actual family the subjects must be complete strangers asked to participate at random.

It will not be blood relations that create a bond within the photograph. The only link they will have will be collective memory through a shared experience of being part of a fabricated personal history. The positioning, lighting and set will be what implies what we view as 'family'.

Kemp Folds

Today I discovered the genius that is 'Kemp Folds.' The idea is simple: print out a photo of Ross Kemp and fold it. Once finished you can send it to Kemp Folds. They've had 46 so far. It's just such a brilliant idea. I may even make my own 'Kemp' later, watch this space...

I recently discovered the website of RedCamper.com who make handbags and laptop bags made from original vintage travel related materials including photographic slides, original car upholstery, airplane seatbelt clips, maps and postcards. Each bag is one of a kind, and so so lovely. I would buy one but the cheapest is $159.00!! Maybe for Christmas?

The Unbearable Likeness of Boyle.

This weekend I had the pleasure of assisting Leeds-based artist Joe Mawson in a day long workshop at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery in Leeds. Joe's practice involves him recreating disaster imagery from news archives in the form of a small scale models and then photographing them, so for the workshop he invited visitors to learn how to create their own youtube videos based on a constructed model.

The 'disaster' that we chose was the Susan Boyle audition footage from Britain's Got Talent, mainly due to the unbelievable press coverage that it has received. (This has a whole meaning now as today it was reported that he has checked into rehab following some kind of breakdown.) We spent a good few hours constructing and filming stages, aswell as a whole host of cardboard characters in the form of Simon Cowell, Ant and Dec and of course Miss Boyle. I was in charge of making a cardboard Amanda Holden, which wasn't too difficult as she only has two facial expressions. Check out some of the photos from the day, Youtube video coming soon!

I found this fragment of a photograph of a girl about a year ago on the floor of the women's toilets at The Watershed, Bristol. I'm intrigued as to where the rest of the photograph is. Did the girl herself destroy the photograph in a moment of self destruction? Maybe someone else now has the remains...

After spending the weekend in Bath/Bristol visiting friends I was met with a 6 hour wait for my train back to Leeds. The last time that this misfortune occurred I ended up watching Confessions of a Shopaholic (definitely not worth my time or money.) However this time I had the pleasure of watching Coraline at the new cinema in Cabot Circus, Bristol. It was my first experience of watching a feature film in 3D which enhanced the absolutely stunning animation. It's directed by Henry Selick whose previous films included The Nightmare Before Christmas and Stardust (I think i'm the only person who enjoyed that film!) and based on Neil Gaiman's international best-selling book. I hadn't previously read the book and knew little of the story so it was new to me.

Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she discovers a secret door that leads into a parallel world and an alternate version of her life. On the surface, the world behind the door is eerily similar to her real life and the people in it – only much better. But when this seemingly perfect world becomes dangerous, and her other parents try to trap her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to escape this increasingly perilous world – and save her real world family.

Coraline is such a charming yet terrifying film. I was totally sucked in by the beauty and kindness of the 'Other Mother' and for a while considered having buttons sewn into my eyes just so that I could have my own star jumper and enchanted garden. A few of my personal highlights were a follows:

1. The theatre full of scotty dogs.
2. Jumping mice spelling out 'Coraline'
3. Buttons for eyes.
4. The initial beauty and charm of the 'Other Mother.'
5. The enchanted garden creating Coraline's portrait in flowers.
6. Mr Bobinsky's 'other' house, including the candy floss cannons.
7. A drawer full of keys.
8. Wybie's multiple lens mask.
9. The multi-coloured tunnel between Coraline's separate lives.

Despite how lovely it looks and a gripping build up, the ending seemed slightly rushed (finding the ghost child's eyes in about 5 minutes.) However I was willing to overlook that because everything else is flawless. I insist that you leave work/school/bed right now and go see this film. Now if you'll excuse me, i'm off to die my hair blue and purchase a yellow rain mac.

I've just been informed that Matt Roberts Arts would like to use an image of Jay and Terri to advertise Salon09 on Re-Title.com. For those of you who don't know, Re-Title.com is the information resource for emerging and professional contemporary art, providing directory services for internationally focused artists and galleries. Salon08 was such a fantastic opportunity to be selected for so I am honored that they have chosen my work and two others to advertise the new show.
